On behalf of Council and all residents of Chilliwack, I am extremely pleased to welcome the Bruins to our community. Those who have been to Chilliwack will know that hockey is a strong rallying factor in our community as we unite to cheer our team. Hockey fans have supported the sport in every way. As a point in case, attendance to local games is second to none in the Valley.

Of course, being a hockey fan myself, I am tremendously excited to see that the Bruins have been revived. It is an honor for Chilliwack to have been chosen as the home of a Major Junior team: it will bring hockey to a whole new level for us and I certainly look forward to many many exciting games ahead.

As Mayor, I strongly believe that the establishment of the Bruins is a step in the right direction in raising the profile of our community to new heights.

"Go Bruins Go."

Clint Hames - Mayor of Chilliwack

Sometime between 5,000 and 10,000 years ago the Sto:lo Nation first arrived in the Chilliwack area.  At the time of first contact it is estimated that there may have been as many as 30,000 people living within Sto:lo territory.

Incorporated in 1873 and the third oldest municipality in BC, the City of Chilliwack is a community of approximately 70,000 that is growing rapidly. Chilliwack is conveniently situated 100 kilometers east of Vancouver in the Fraser Valley , or a one-hour drive on the Trans Canada Highway .

In its pioneering days the community served as a gateway as well as a hinterland to the fur trade and gold mines at Yale and Hope. The arable flat land and the improved transportation of the Lower mainland soon reoriented the community’s economic ties toward the Vancouver area. As Greater Vancouver expands, the Lower Mainland becomes integrated as one economic region with Chilliwack very much a spoke in the wheel.

Originally spelled Chilliwack, Chilliwack is a “Halkomelem” word meaning quieter water at the head. It is a geographic description of the area that is very fitting.

Scenic Chilliwack , with its surrounding mountains, lakes and rivers offers fun filled family attractions, world class sports fishing, white water river rafting, beautiful lakes, hiking, camping, boating, kayaking and biking trails that lead to awe-inspiring vistas, spectacular golf vacations for all skill levels and great festivals. Chilliwack offers a cornucopia of opportunity for extreme sorts and outdoor enthusiasts alike.

A short drive from Chilliwack reveals several unique points of interest that highlight the natural beauty of the region.  Minter Gardens , Bridal Falls , Great Blue Heron Nature Reserve, Cult us Lake Provincial park and Harrison Hot Springs welcome thousands of visitors from all over the world each year.

Outstanding recreational opportunities also feature prominently, with, water slides, golf courses and sparkling beaches among the many outdoor activities.

Chilliwack is also fortunate to have many fine restaurants ranging from elegant European cuisine to diverse ethnic choices, plus a wealth of modestly priced family restaurants and outlets. In total, 6,500 seats are available in the combined total of all eating establishments.

Chilliwack has an excellent reputation for hosting many successful provincial, national, and international sporting and cultural events. Some of these include the 1993 Slo Pitch National Championship, the 1993 BC Summer Games, the 1997 BC Disability Games and most recently host to the very successful BC Senior Games in September 2003.
The economy in this area is well divided amongst agricultural, industrial, commercial and recreational activity. This diversity supports an eclectic range of attractions and cultural events that await visitors. For more information on the city of Chilliwack please click on the following links:
