Bruins top Cougars 6-4

The Chilliwack Bruins got five goals

from five different players in the opening frame, then held on for a 6-4 win over the Prince George Cougars on Saturday night.

Mark Santorelli, Ken Petkau, Nick Holden, Colby Kulhanek and Ryan Howse scored first period markers to stake the team to a 5-1 first period lead.

At 17:42 of period one, Matt Esposito was bowled over behind his goal setting off a series of altercations.  Both starting goaltenders, Real Cyr of the Cougars and Matt Esposito of the Bruins, were ejected for fighting.  Mark Friesen of the Bruins and the Cougars Tommy Tartaglione mopped up in relief for their respective clubs.

After a scoreless second period, the Cougars scored three times in the third to make things interesting.  Dale Hunt scored to make it 5-2, followed by Dana Tyrell with a pair to make it 5-4 Bruins.  Oscar Moller relieved the pressure for the Bruins, knocking his first of the year into an empty net to secure a Bruin victory. 

Ty Wishart scored in the first period for the Cougs.

Matt Esposito gets the win for the Bruins, even though he played just 17 minutes and handled only four shots, stopping 3. 

Real Cyr takes the loss for the Cougars.  Final shots on goal were 24 for the Cougars and 23 for the Bruins.

Next Bruins action is Sunday, as the Bruins take on the Vancouver Giants in Chilliwack. Game time is 5 pm.      


Ice Chips: The Bruins tied a team record for goals in a period with five in the opening 20 minutes. Chilliwack scored five goals in the 3rd period vs the Kelowna Rockets in a 7-1 home ice victory last season...Mark Santorelli's goal and two assists in the first period set a new team high for points in a period. The previous record of two was held by several players...Mark Santorelli and Ken Petkau's first period goal were scored 14 seconds apart, a new team record for fastest two goals.
