Bruins 3 Oil Kings 2

February 19, 2008

The Chilliwack Bruins moved one step closer to securing a playoff spot Tuesday night with a 3-2 victory over the visiting Edmonton Oil Kings. The Bruins (26-27-3-4) are in seventh place in the Western Conference, three points ahead of the eighth place Kamloops Blazers and a 21 point lead over the Prince George Cougars who are currently in ninth. The top eight teams qualify for the playoffs.

After a scoreless first period in which the Bruins were outshot 13-9, Edmonton opened the scoring midway through the second period when Brenden Dowd and Brennan Sonne scored goals just nine seconds apart to give the Kings a 2-0 lead. Evan Pighin brought the Bruins to within one with his 15th of the season with just under two minutes left in the second.

In the third Mark Santorelli tied it up slipping the puck past Edmonton starting goaltender Alex Archiblad. Kevin Sundher, with his first WHL point, earned an assist on the goal. Four minutes later, Jadon Potter forced a turnover in the Edmonton end, freeing the puck up for Oscar Moller who grabbed the loose puck and snapped a shot low, just inside the post past Edmonton goaltender Alex Archibald.

Edmonton outshot Chilliwack 38-28. Edmonton was 9/3 on the power play, Chilliwack went 0/1. Mark Friesen earned the victory in goal for Chilliwack.

The Bruins now head out on their longest road trip of the year, beginning Friday night in Saskatoon.

Ice Chips: The Bruins now have 26 wins on the season, one more than last year... The Bruins won for just the second time this season when trailing after forty, and are now 2-23-1 in 26 games when trailing after two periods...Edmonton was a perfect 15-0-0-0 when leading after two periods before tonight's contest.
