The Chilliwack Bruins and the WHL provide young hockey players with the best of both worlds. Obtain a high standard of education and play in the world’s premiere development league.
All WHL clubs are governed by League Educational Standards that ensure players complete their high school in a timely and successful fashion. All players’ grades are monitored closely by the team, their education advisors and school counselors. If necessary players receive tutoring or assistance to ensure they perform academically to their full potential. All costs associated with players’ education whether high school or post secondary courses are covered by the Club. For players who want to succeed both academically and in hockey, the Chilliwack Bruins and the WHL offer the opportunity to reach for the top of the class both on and of the ice.
The Chilliwack Bruins and the WHL understand the importance of setting goals both on and off the ice. The WHL is the leading provider of full academic scholarships to its graduate players.
The WHL Scholarship is fully guaranteed, for every season a player participates in the WHL, he is entitled to a full year of tuition, textbooks and compulsory fees to a Canadian or American post secondary institution of his choice. This is over and above any other grants or bursaries provided by the institutions themselves to the student athletes. Once a player graduates from the WHL and provided he does not sign a professional contract with an NHL, AHL or European Club, he is eligible to obtain a fully indexed scholarship for each year played in the WHL.
Over 160 WHL graduate players attend Universities and Colleges on full WHL Scholarships each year. Since 1993, the WHL has awarded over 1,400 scholarships to graduate players representing an investment of over $4 million. The WHL currently is one of the leading contributors of academic scholarships in
Western Canada
.
The WHL provides players with a bona fide University and College hockey scholarship option. By playing in the WHL, players can take advantage of one of the finest post-secondary scholarships available.
During the 2004 - 2005 season 258 players, who have graduated from or were playing in the WHL, attended post-secondary institutions on WHL Scholarships. Included were153 graduate and current players at Canadian Universities, 84 at
Canadian
Colleges
and 21 attending other post-secondary institutions.
WHL Scholarships are solely funded by the member Clubs of the WHL. This season, the full academic scholarships awarded by WHL Clubs to graduate players, combined with the education assistance provided to current players represents a total contribution close to $1 million in financial support.
